I was at the Dallas Farmers Market Saturday (Oct. 31) and discovered a Dallas delicacy: corn (in my case, in a cup — about $4.50), from Paul’s Sweet Roasted Corn.
William Paul Gray runs the stand, and when I went, pastor and doctor Harvey L. Hollman was doing announcing for him. As I drove and walked by, “Hollman” (he wanted me to use this name) informed me that the corn was “a little taste of heaven.” As Farmers Market Perusers walked by, he also shouted in an amazingly orator-ish voice, ”Get your sweet roasted corn.” Since I simply could not refuse, I tried some of the corn (“The Works”: butter, mayonnaise and parmesan cheese on top of the corn) and it was scrumptious. William called me “darlin” and urged me to come back to the corn haven. You may also buy corn on the cob and sausage. (William also sells produce at the Farmer’s Market, in a different stand.)
Along with the corn stand, there are plenty of good finds at the Farmers Market–vegetables, flowers, fruit, honey, pecans–almost anything that can be grown on a farm in Texas. While there, I also tasted apples, watermelon, mango, papaya and a tangerine. Also, a farmer’s helper who was handing out some other tangerines got mad because I did not want to try her tangerine.
If you go, do sample to your heart’s content.
This blog post is my tribute to the fabulous Corn Stand at the Farmer’s Market.
Their mouth watering corn truly made my day.
