Why I Say To Trouble Yourself With Skillman Street Pub

Skillman Street Pub (Why is it called a pub if there seems to be no Irish influence??)

214.341.4022.  I called when they were supposed to be open and they did not answer. However, this is the number on their Myspace page. 

Sun. Dec. 6, they are having a Battle of the Bands.

I attended a show at Skillman Street Pub.  I got greeted by a toothless bouncer. I found two reasons why you should also go inside: 1.) You are wishing to ogle Metal Heads and Richland College-esque People (The college is nearby, on Abrams Road) (Dallas only reference, my apology) 2.) You like visiting dive bars that are also somewhat Creepy.           

 Five bands were on the ticket when I went Dec. 4. I am not the most qualified blogger because I only heard one of them.

As usual, I will continue writing this post anyway.  

The fashion police (me) noticed mostly trashy style and leather jackets. 

The lineup for the night was: Waking Alice (Please don’t Wake Alice if you are considering it, from me), the Hot Hello, Fusillade, Frenik and headliner Oliphant. 

Waking Alice (really from Mansfield but they told me the “Arlington area”) went on at 9:45 and finished at about 10:15.  I would describe their style as Shamelessly Loud, similar to: Van Halen, Pearl Jam or Guns ’N Roses (there was no Axl Rose dancing, thank goodness). Michael Garcia, Brandon Brewer, Derrick Anderson and Coady Mars seemed serious and devoted. Part of their collective aura on stage was being obnoxious, in a good way. Afterward Garcia said, “hit us up on Myspace.”        

 I did not see Oliphant but I know the three-member band is excellent because I saw them last year. Oliphant went on at 12:45. They are very hard rocking, to say the least.          

I did not see The Hot Hello, but I did find some useful biographical content from http://thehothello.com: “Birthed from the fusion of clever song writing, explosive riffs, and tempestuous percussion; The Hot Hello is an alternative rock band from Arlington, Texas.” That is a good fusion to have. 

This is from www.NightGuide.com: Skillman Street Pub offers daily drink specials, live band on Fri. and Sat., karaoke on Tuesdays, Texas Hold’em on Mon. and Thurs., 9 ball tournament on Wed. and have fun with darts, air hockey, Megatouch, Golden Tee and a few other attractions.

This seems like a livelier schedule than what I witnessed at Skillman Street Pub. When I was there a couple of people were playing pool but that was the extent of the games. Don’t get me wrong, NightGuide.com could be right, it just seems like too packed of a social calendar for the little bar with a smattering of people there on Friday. Yes, it was also freezing that day; this could have influenced how many people showed up.         

When I asked for a business card at Skillman Street Pub they did not have one. I went to talk to aforementioned bouncer and he gave me a VIP card with the address which he said will allow me to “get in free” on any night. $4 Coronas, here I come.    

In closing, I bring you a nugget from the pub’s Myspace page: (Yes, it appears in block letters): 

“THE BEST SOUND IN THE AREA
PLENTY OF FREE PARKING &
ALWAYS GREAT DRINK PRICES.”

Well, the parking was free but I don’t know about the Always Great Drink Prices. The pub charges those playing in bands for drinks (lame); also see aforementioned Corona.
